Since the first of October 2010, the «South-East Asia» collections from the Cinquantenaire Museum are once again visible to the public, arranged in five renovated rooms (new floor, new paint, new lighting, new windows, two large bamboo pedestals as well as a new scenography), in order to enhance the value of the objects exhibited.

A first room presents the cultures of Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar (Burma). Sensual, Khmer statues from the IXth century and serene heads of Buddha are among the master pieces. A golden statue of a monk from the XVIth century is proof of the typical taste for glamour and the simplicity of the decorations in Thai culture. We can also admire some large paintings on banners, while a frightening ceramic statue from the XVIth century representing a guard is one of the most recent acquisitions.
Focus on Vietnam and Laos
The second room is dedicated to Vietnam and Laos. The collection of large, bronze drums, next to the ceramics, forms an exceptional ensemble that is unequaled out of Vietnam. Clément Huet assembled these approximately 3 000 objects which the museum purchased in 1952. The splendid plates and sculptural ceramics are examples of this rich cultural heritage and allow to make a link with the archaeological diggings carried out in 2002 by the Musée du Cinquantenaire and the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology on the site of the Go Hoi potters.
Heading for Indonesia
The two following rooms are dedicated to the numerous cultures that developed on the Indonesian archipelago, where various components are determining: tribal and animist beliefs, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. The sculptures are very expressive and there are utilitarian objects artistically worked, refined jewelry, as well as materials made according to the traditional techniques of batik and ikat. Antique reduced models of rooms allow us to become familiar with the local architecture. Last but not least, a last space hosts a traditional theatre of shadows with its puppets and its gamelan orchestra.
