Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) était l'un des plus grands peintres de paysage britanniques. Il a produit une série de très belles aquarelles durant sa carrière tragiquement courte. JMW Turner, son contemporain, a dit de lui : Si Tom avait vécu, j'aurais été affamé ».
